    Remembrance Day

    Hello all,
    poppy.jpg
Tomorrow will be Remembrance Day here in the UK.
We will remember the Fallen from the First World War through to today.
100 years ago, 1915, WW1 had settled into the trench warfare that we know today.
We had already witnessed the first disaster that become known as Gallipoli. An invasion of Turkey from the Dardanelles Straights that went wrong from the first minute. 1000's of Anzac (Australia, New Zealand Army Corps) troops died followed by, at least, 72,000 British casualties. The First Sea Lord, Winston Churchill, oversaw the operation and regretted it for the rest of his life.

    ESPECIALLY FOR DOC..........

    Noel Chavasse VC.jpg

Noel Chavasse VC, the only double VC winner in World War One, and one of three men to have done so throughout history. Part of the medical corps, he led rescue and recovery missions to rescue fallen comrades in the perilous no man’s land despite aggressive shell fire. He took a fatal shot to the head at Passchendaele.
    Doc? Medics DO get recognised!

    FOR THE FALLEN

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

    Phil.

    Remembrance Day

    Hello Lars,
    Thanks for your post.
The symbol is the poppy flower.
By 1915, the trenches stretched from the English Channel to the Swiss border, crossing the Somme basin and a considerable amount of farmland.
If you can imagine the shellfire, mortars, grenades that exploded and broke up the ground to quite a depth. This threw up poppy seeds that had lain dormant for, what could be, centuries. They germinated and flowered, creating, each summer, this amazing beauty amongst all the carnage.
In 1919 the British Legion was created for veterans and by 1921 they had taken the Poppy as the official emblem.
These poppies are made by disabled ex-servicemen and women and sold every year to collect donations to help ex-servicemen and their families.
